Manuel Lopes Andrade (Tcheka)

He began to "look" at the world with curiosity and earned the nickname of Tcheka. But it's with his voice and the art of playing the guitar that Manuel Lopes Andrade conquers the stage and the applause of the world. Listening to Tcheka's work is a journey through the diversity of Cape Verdean music, in a universal musical language composed mainly of the rhythms "Taloulou" or "Bandera", from the island of Fogo and "Tabanka", mixed with drumming.

The raspy voice in the symbiosis of the sweet melodies composed by the artist and, to the rhythm of his inseparable guitar, has raced the stages and international awards. The artist, recently nominated in the category of best African singer (West Coast) for the Kora All Africa Music Awards 2008 with the theme "Sabu" of the third album "Lonji", won in 2005 the prize from Radio France International - Musiques du Monde with the album "Nu monda".

This son from Santa Catarina, Santiago Island, took his first steps in music with his father, Nho Raúl Andrade, a musician known at community parties. Although he began to play music with his father, at the age of 15 he began to develop his own style of music.

Tcheka's first work "Argui" already showed a lot of dedication, knowledge and respect for the traditional music of Cape Verde with themes that take to the music the daily life of the island sung in the Creole of Santiago.
