Little is known about the Cape Verdean philosopher José Rodrigues Aleixo, except that he was born in Brava on June 25, 1848 and died, in the greatest loneliness, in the same place in 1888.

Having received the gift of healing certain diseases, he became a legendary character, also known as "Djedi Portrero".

He was also a professor of philosophy in Eugénio Tavares, on this island, then residence of the Governor of Cape Verde.
