José Duarte (Djosinha)

José Duarte (Djosinha) was born in São Vicente and started singing at the age of 11. He recorded close to 20 albums, which he recorded with Voz de Cabo Verde and also as a soloist. Besides being a singer, he played football in the teams of Castilho and Mindelense, in São Vicente, where he also played theatre at Castilho.

At the age of 16, he worked as a sweeper at the emblematic Eden-Park Cinema Theatre in São Vicente, where he didn't miss the films shown there. Later, he developed into a seat indicator and ticket salesman. In 1959, when he worked at the "Supirinha" soda factory in Galleano, he was called on to take a test on the Sport Lisboa e Benfica football team, at the same time as the "black panther" Eusébio joined the glorious club of Portugal.

However, a serious accident at work cut off his football career when he suffered an Achilles tendon injury. Later, he emigrated to the "Voz de Cabo Verde" team, where they played two or three shows a week. He was with the group for five years. Djosinha has already sung to audiences of more than twenty thousand people in France, in a gala attended by representatives of various African and Arab nations.

At the same time, the singer holds the record for longevity in the radio program "Caminho pa Cabo Verde" in the United States, broadcast through the 97.3 station based in New Bedford. It is more than 40 years in the air. Next June, Djosinha, "symbol" of the group Voice of Cape Verde will be honored on the island that saw him born.
