Carlota de Barros Fermino Areal Alves

Carlota de Barros Fermino Areal Alves was born on the island of Fogo on January 24, 1942. During her childhood she lived in the islands of Fogo, Brava, S. Nicolau and S. Vicente. In 1949 he moved with his family to Mozambique where she stayed until 1957, when she left for Portugal. In this country, she graduated in Germanic Philology from the Faculty of Letters of the Universidade Clássica de Lisboa. She has lived in Portugal since 1974, but constantly visits his country.

Carlota de Barros is a columnist for the Artiletra newspaper, has published texts in the Pre-Text Magazine and in other Literature and Arts magazines. In 2000, she launched her first book of poetry, "A Ternura da Água"; in 2003 she published "A Minha Alma Corre em Silêncio". In 2007, the National Library and Book Institute edited its poetry book, "Sonho Sonhado", which is reedited in 2008, in a trilingual edition (Creole, Portuguese and English), the first trilingual edition published in Cape Verde.

The poetry of Carlota de Barros surprises by the tenderness that emanates, the affectionate and exacerbated lyricism singing their islands, so his that the permanence in the far-away land does not reduce his feeling, moreover, only increases his sensitivity transfigured into soft verses, sometimes melancholic, but always presenting a look of solidarity and love for her country, her Cape Verdean land. A poetry that deserves a place of prominence within the fortunately diversified contemporary literary panorama of Cape Verde.
