Studied Law at the Universidade Clássica de Lisboa. Back in Cape Verde, she was an adviser to the Supreme Court of Justice and an adviser to the President of the Republic. In 1995, she received the North-South Award from the Council of Europe, in recognition of her struggle to defend human rights. She was a member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and the International Commission of Jurists.

She made his literary debut in 1993, with the book of poems Amanhã A madrugada (Tomorrow Dawn). Her first novel, A Candidata (The Candidate) (2003), received the Sonangol Literature Prize.
