Teixeira de Sousa graduated in Medicine in Lisbon in 1945 and attended the following year's Instituto de Medicina Tropical do Porto.
He later took the specialty of nutritionist, and was initially placed as a doctor in Timor.
Teixeira de Sousa settled the following year in his native island of Fogo, where his action in favour of minimal public health structures was remarkable. He later worked in São Vicente, until he retired on the eve of independence and settled in Oeiras, where he lived until the end of his days.
