Padre António Vieira

António Vieira was born in Lisbon on February 6, 1608 and died in Salvador on July 18, 1697. Better known as Padre António Vieira, he was a Portuguese religious, philosopher, writer and speaker of the Society of Jesus.

One of the most influential characters of the 17th century in terms of politics and oratory, he stood out as a missionary in Brazilian lands. In this capacity, he tirelessly defended the rights of indigenous peoples by fighting their exploitation and enslavement and doing their evangelization. It was called "Paiaçu" by them (Great Father / Father, in Tupi).

António Vieira also defended the Jews, the abolition of the distinction between new Christians (converted Jews, persecuted at the time by the Inquisition) and old Christians (the traditional Catholics), and the abolition of slavery. He also severely criticized the priests of his time and the Inquisition itself.

Father António Vieira spent the Christmas week of 1652 in Cidade Velha, in Cape Verde, where he preached two sermons (22 and 26 December) with such success that the population did not want to let him leave for Brazil.
