Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silva (Horace Silver)

Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, Horace Silver was an American jazz pianist and composer. He was the son of João Tavares Silva, from Cape Verde, and Gertrude, an American.

He excelled in hard bop and soul jazz styles. Silver began his musical history as a sax-tenorist and later turned to the piano. He released most of his albums on the Blue Note label, with which he is very identified. Song For My Father, a 1964 album, is, as the title says, a musical tribute to Silver's father, and carries musical influences from the Cape Verdean origins of the paternal family.
