Particularly on the island of Santiago, there is a growing number of garça boieira (bubulcus íbis), which are popularly known as manel pastor and normally seen on the back of quadrupeds in the pastures, catching the insects that they stir up from the grass. It is a migratory bird, which comes from the continent from December to May, and it is quite a scenic spectacle to see them arrive in flocks before twilight, before spending the night in the branches of the trees, preferably close to the freshwater plains.
