Teófilo Chantre

Teófilo Chantre, born in 1964 on the island of São Nicolau, is a Cape Verdean musician and composer. When Teófilo Chantre was thirteen, his family left Cape Verde for Paris. This distance from his native land served as an inspiration and awakened his creativity, having begun to compose, during his adolescence, songs inspired by the mornas and coladeiras of his land.

Throughout his life he was also very much influenced by the rest of the lusophone music, the Brazilian one in particular. His reputation as a singer and composer increased to the point where Cesária Évora recorded three of his songs on her record Miss Perfumado, which made her an international star.

Having continued to compose for other interpreters, Chantre consolidated her position as an interpreter and recorded several records, including Di Alma and Viaja. In concert he interprets his songs mainly acoustically, with accordion, bass, guitar, cavaquinho and drums.
