Ovídio Martins

Ovídio Martins' itinerary departs from Mindelo (São Vicente Island), where he was born in 1928. After completing high school in this city, the young Ovídio Martins went to Lisbon in 1947 and enrolled in the Faculty of Law. However, for health reasons in particular (almost complete loss of hearing), he never finished his legal studies.

In spite of everything, he maintains an important cultural and political activity. Hardly persecuted for his anti-fascist militancy and arrested by the P.I.D.E.-D.G.S., Ovídio Martins, as a large number of Cape Verdean emigrants, took refuge in Amsterdam, returning to Cape Verde only after independence.

His participation in Cape Verde's cultural and political life began quite early. Ovídio Martins was one of the founders of the Cultural Supplement (1958), a group that wanted to radically break with European archetypes and guide the creative activity of writers towards Cape Verdean roots themes, in a more vehement and protestant tone. In 1962, two works by O.Martins were published: "Caminhada" (poems), in Lisbon and "Tchutchinha" (short stories), in Angola. However, the book that will have the greatest impact on the author's literary life is precisely entitled "I will scream, scream, kill, I will not go to Pasárgada".

Since 1977, Ovídio Martins has also collaborated in the magazine Raízes, published in the Cape Verdean capital and directed by Arnaldo França. Prestigious poets and novelists such as António Aurélio Gonçalves, Baltasar Lopes, Corsino Fortes, Arménio Vieira, etc. also participate in the same magazine.

In this brief biographical note by Ovídio Martins, other publications in which the poet collaborated are also worth mentioning: Claridade, Cabo Verde, Vértice, Suplemento literário do Jornal de Notícias, Notícias do Imbondeiro, Le Journal des Poètes (Belgium).
