Mário Alberto de Almeida Fonseca was born in Praia, Cape Verde, in 1939. He was a French teacher in Senegal, worked in Mauritania and Turkey as an administrator.

He has poems scattered in magazines, newspapers and anthologies - Boletim de Cabo Verde, Seló (which he founded together with the Cape Verdean poet Arménio Vieira), África, Internacional, Solidarité, Afrique, África, Raízes, Poésie du monde Noir (Presence Africaine d´Expression Portuguese). His works include "O Mar e as Rosas", which was confiscated in Lisbon in 1964, when the then Portuguese Writers' Association was forcibly shut down by the Political Police.

Poetic work: Près de la mer, Mon pays est une musique et Poissons. His work was translated into several languages.
