Jorge Fernandes Monteiro (Jotamont)

On October 10, 1913, Jorge Monteiro was born, aboard a sailboat, 200 miles from the coast of the USA, where he lived until the age of eleven. When he reached that age, he returned with his mother to Cape Verde and S. Vicente.

At the age of sixteen, he composed his first samba, with a reduced orchestration, for the Municipal band, where he was an apprentice to José Alves dos Reis (Nhô Reis).

Later, he moved to the city of Praia, on the island of Santiago, where he spent twenty-one years as the first trumpet of the band of this city. There he began to compose his first mornas and, in 1967, he returned to S. Vicente to take the place of Reis who had died. It is above all from this date that his personality begins to assert itself as a musician, thanks to the new task of directing.

His inspiration is mainly linked to the land, to a nationalist-romantic feeling, very common from B. Léza, and with the beginning of massive emigration.
His best known mornas are: "São Cente", "Fidjo Maguado", "Terra Mártir", etc.
