João Gomes da Graça

João da Graça was born in Cape Verde. He lives and works in Mindelo, São Vicente where he did his complementary studies in the Industrial and Commercial School of Mindelo and, in that school, he did the General Course in Mechanics, he's been drawing since childhood. One day he realized that he had to study more to improve his works.

On his island there was no Art School and, therefore, he decided to start a Course of Drawing and Painting by Correspondence with the Álvaro Torrão School located in Portugal, which did not finish. This course was directed by José Maria Parramón and allowed him to have a first contact with some Spanish painters such as Guillermo Fresquet Bardina with whom he learned Aguarela, José Maria Parramón and Rosendo Gonzalez Carbonell with whom he learned to paint figures and also with Francisco Serra. This happened in 1985.

Since then he began to learn about other painters in the library of the Alliance Française du Mindelo, reading the encyclopedias of art. This allowed him to make an approach to the art of Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Renoir, Manet and many other universal art masters.
