Carmen Souza was born in Lisbon (1981) to a Cape Verdean family. She grew up speaking Creole and Portuguese, surrounded by her parents' way of life. Self-taught, she sang in a Portuguese gospel group.
Discovered at the age of 17 by bassist Theo Pas'Cal, who became his producer and mentor, she quickly builds an unmistakable sound, served by a unique timbre and vocal technique of great beauty, a wide range of voice, which draws its roots from Cape Verdean culture, but also from traditional African rhythms or jazz (she has performed in some of the most reputable international jazz festivals).
With a brilliant career, she has already recorded six albums, the last of which, Kachupada.
Carmen Souza has been touring in Europe, the United States, Africa, Japan and Korea, with performances praised by the critics and received with enthusiasm by the audience. Her albums have also deserved excellent references in the media and various rewards.
