António Vicente Lopes, the violinist Antoninho Travadinha, was born in Janela on the island of Santo Antão was one of the greatest self-taught musicians in Cape Verde. He started playing popular dances when he was only nine years old, but he only achieved fame in his forties, when he toured Portugal in 1981.

In addition to the violin, Travadinha also played wonderfully well guitar (12-string guitar), cavaquinho and guitar. Travadinha played traditional Cape Verdean musical genres such as mornas and coladeiras.

He died in 1987 at the height of his popularity.
