António Nunes

António Nunes was born in Praia, capital of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, on 9.12.1917 and died in Lisbon, on 14.5.1951, victim of a menigo-encephalitis. He settled in Lisbon, around 1940, and in this city he lived assiduously with the neo-realist group of which his patrício Teixeira de Sousa was a part.

His literary debut took place in Cape Verde, first in the press, then with the book of poems Devaneios, published in 1939, still with the aesthetics before Clarity. It was here, in Lisbon, in contact with the new neo-realist generation, that António Nunes freed himself from the previous poetic canons and embarked on the construction of a poetic discourse that was socially and authentically Cape Verdean.
