The highest points in the islands of the west - Sal (Monte Grande – 252m), Boavista (Monte Estância, 387m) and Maio (Monte Penoso, 431m) – evidence that they are the flattest of the archipelago, at the same level as Santa Luzia (Topona, 397m).
However Fogo (Pico do Fogo, 2,829 m – the 120th highest in the world), Santo Antão (Topo de Coroa, 1,979m, and Pico da Cruz, 1,585m), Santiago (Pico d'Antónia, 1,394m and Serra da Malagueta, 1,064m), S. Nicolau (Monte Gordo, 1,312m), Brava (Monte Fontainhas, 976m), and S. Vicente (Monte Verde, 750m), are more rugged.
