Rufino Almeida (Bau)

Born in São Vicente, Bau is a self-taught musician who began learning to play the cavaquinho at the age of seven. Later, he learned from his father how to build his own instruments: the cavaquinho, violin and the ten-string guitar. It was from these instruments that he built his musical universe, first connected to Cape Verde's roots and then going beyond the borders of his country.

Rufino de Almeida, Bau's real name, has collaborations with recognized names in Cape Verdean music, such as Cesária Évora, Tito Paris and Bius, having formed the Gaiatos group with these last two artists. The theme "Raquel" marked his career by being part of the soundtrack of the film Fala com Ela (Hable con Ella, in the original title), by Pedro Almodóvar. Since the beginning of his career, Bau has released the solo albums Jalísa, Tôp d'Coroa e Inspiração, Silêncio, Ilha Azul and Bau plays Vasco Martins.
