Osvaldo Dias (Vaiss) was born in 1964 on the island of Santo Antão. He spent all his childhood and youth in São Vicente, where he began learning guitar and cavaquinho with master Travadinha. With Adriano Santos, already in the 80's, he took his first steps in wind instruments, in particular the saxophone.

In 1988, he came to Portugal to work with Bana. Later he worked with Paulino Vieira, Ildo Lobo, Maria Alice, Hermínia, Lura, Deixa Clarear, Rodrigo Leça, Caetano Veloso, Dany Silva, Cesária Évora, Sara Tavares, Gabriela Mendes, Nancy Vieira, Biús, Rui Veloso, Gil do Carmo, Filipe Mukenga among others. From 2004 to 2007 he was part of the Navegante Group.

In Portugal, he studied at the Hot Club school, at the Academia dos Amadores de Música, and at the Escola de Música do Conservatório de Santarém.
