Cape Verdean singer, Francelina Durão de Almeida was born in 1965, in Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, in Cape Verde. At the age of 10, she performed with Flores de Mindelo, a troupe of female voices and this experience would allow her to meet the composer Ti Goi (Gregório Gonçalves), one of the most important names in Cape Verdean music at the time. Through him, Fantcha meets Cesária Évora. Sponsored by her, as a friend and teacher, and with Ti Goi's artistic orientation, Fantcha developed her vocal abilities and the emotional expressiveness of her singing.

In 1988, she moved to Boston, after having spent time there with Cesária Évora, and soon afterwards settled in New York. The emigration would give her the conditions to dedicate herself entirely to the musical career and record the first long-lasting records of her career. The first album, Criolinha (1988), recorded in Portugal, would become an international success, captivating the world for her soulful mornas. Gradually recognized in the American market, she would perform in prestigious festivals such as the Hollywood Bowl, the Chicago World Music Festival and the Summerstage, in New York.
