Celina Pereira

Born on the island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde, Celina Pereira went with her family to the island of S. Vicente when she was only six years old. From her family she inherited the artistic vein. Her paternal grandfather, father of 17 children and Catholic priest, was a philologist, poet, musician and painter. A man who knew how to transmit his enormous wisdom and talent to his children.

Celina Pereira, an 8-year-old girl, began singing as a soloist in the Orfeão, in the Protestant church. Then followed "Eden Parque", in Mindelo, and her Serões para Trabalhadores, always hidden from her father. Her first professional performance was in 1968, at the age of 25, at the invitation of the Ritmos Cabo-Verdianos Group. This was followed by Bana's invitations to perform in the saraus he organized.

In Portugal, her first performance on television was in the program "Arroz Doce" by Júlio Isidro, where she met Eunice Muñoz and Marina Mota who were part of the show. This, on the occasion of the promotion of the album "Mar Azul - Cantá Mudjers", resulting from the 1st Festival of Women's Voices, organized by OMCV - Organização das Mulheres de Cabo Verde.

Since her first LP "Força di Crêtcheu", Celina Pereira has always been concerned with the preservation of collective memory and, consequently, with the identity of the Cape Verdean people itself, she has been fulfilling the adventure of trying to recover the richness and diversity of the Cape Verdean musical culture.

With research and collections in Cape Verde and the Cape Verdean diaspora around the world, Celina Pereira has recovered mazurkas, wedding and warm songs, wheel songs, lunduns, crying, lenga-lengas and rural toadas and enabled the safeguarding of these themes.

Celina Pereira has also developed a permanent activity in several areas of communication, namely as a radio journalist and storyteller, an activity initiated in high schools and schools in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, since 1990.

With a striking image, green eyes and penetrating gaze, Celina says she is a demanding and proud woman. Intelligent and cultured, she is with great commitment and dedication that she embraces her projects and with great determination that she fights for them. The sky is her only limit and the yellow rose is her favorite flower.
